Food & Drinks at the Prado

Café Prado inside for a quick break, and one of Madrid's best food neighbourhoods immediately outside. Where to sit down, where to grab a quick bite, and the local secrets within a 5-minute walk on Calle Jesús and Plaza de Santa Ana.

The Prado has one café inside — Café Prado in the Jerónimos extension — and the wider Barrio de las Letras outside is one of Madrid's best food neighbourhoods. Combine this with the visitors guide if you're planning a half-day visit, and the opening hours for café times.

Inside Café Prado and around the Barrio de las Letras

Food

Café Prado serves freshly-made bocadillos (Spanish baguette sandwiches), salads, the soup of the day and sweet pastries. Vegetarian options are always available. Outside, Casa González on Calle León does excellent cheese and wine, and Lhardy (founded 1839) is the place for old-school Madrileño cocido stew.

Drinks

Café Prado serves Spanish coffee — espresso around €2.50, café con leche around €3. Wine and Spanish craft beer are on the menu from late morning. Card and contactless accepted; cash also fine. Outside, Bar Cock on Calle de la Reina (since 1921) is a classic for cocktails, and the terraces of Plaza de Santa Ana are perfect for an evening glass of wine.

Recommendations nearby

For a quick bite, the Mercado de San Miguel (15 min walk) has tapas counters from across Spain — pricey but excellent. Calle Jesús is lined with tabernas serving classic Madrid raciones, and Plaza de Santa Ana (5 min walk) has the city's best terrace scene. For something special, StreetXO by chef Dabiz Muñoz is a 10-minute walk.

Plan a half-day in the Barrio de las Letras

The smartest itinerary is a 10:00 museum slot, a sit-down break at Café Prado around midday, and a Spanish-style late lunch (14:00–15:30) afterwards in the streets behind the museum. From there it's a 10-minute walk to either the Reina Sofía (afternoon entry, Picasso's Guernica) or the Thyssen-Bornemisza, completing Madrid's Golden Triangle of Art.

If you come in the afternoon, flip the order: lunch at 14:00, museum at 16:00, drinks afterwards on Plaza de Santa Ana as the sun sets behind the Royal Palace.
