Prado Museum Rules

No photography, no large bags, security checks at every entrance — the rules are stricter than at most museums for good reason. What to know before you walk in so nothing slows you down at the door.

The Prado has stricter rules than most museums because its 17th-century pigments are extremely sensitive to light and humidity. The two surprises for first-time visitors are no photography in the permanent collection and no bags larger than a daypack. See our visitors guide and accessibility page for related info.

Rules & Regulations FAQ

Common questions about what's allowed

Why is photography forbidden?
The 17th-century pigments used by Velázquez, Goya and their contemporaries are extremely sensitive to camera flashes and prolonged exposure. The blanket ban also keeps galleries flowing smoothly without people setting up shots.
Are sketchbooks allowed?
Yes — pencil sketching is welcome in most galleries. No pens, paint, ink or pastels.
What size bag is allowed inside?
Daypacks up to 30×40 cm. Larger bags, suitcases and any wheeled luggage must be checked.
Are tripods or selfie sticks permitted?
No — neither is allowed inside the museum at any time. Both must stay in the cloakroom.
Can I bring a baby carrier or stroller?
Baby carriers are welcome. Strollers are allowed in the galleries but staff may ask you to fold them when crowds build.
Is the museum quiet inside?
Voices are encouraged to stay low. Phone calls are not permitted inside the galleries — step back to the entrance hall.
Can I bring food?
No food or drink in the galleries. Café Prado is open all day for sit-down breaks.
Is there a dress code?
No dress code — wear what you're comfortable in. The galleries are climate-controlled at a steady 20°C, so layers help in summer.
