The Prado has more than 8,000 paintings and most visitors only have 2–3 hours. A guided tour is the difference between checking off Las Meninas and actually understanding why it's the most analysed painting in Western art. See our visitors guide for help choosing, and the best time to visit page if you want a quieter tour experience.

Which tour should I pick?

For a first visit, the small-group expert tour is the best value. The Prado is so large and so layered that a self-guided audio guide leaves most people feeling they've missed something — a human guide can read the room, answer questions, and connect the paintings to the political and religious history of the Spanish empire.

If you're short on time or budget, the official audio guide covers 50 key works and works well for visitors who already have art-history background. Families with children should pick the family tour over the standard audio guide; it turns the visit into a treasure hunt rather than a lecture.

All tours start at the Jerónimos meeting point. Arrive 15 minutes early to clear security and the cloakroom.

In which languages is the audio guide available?

Do I need my own headphones?
For the audio guide, yes — it streams via the museum app on your own phone. The shop sells inexpensive earphones if needed.
How big are expert tour groups?
Maximum 15 people. Most tours run with 8–12 visitors plus the guide, which keeps Q&A possible throughout.
Is admission included with a guided tour?
Yes — guided tour packages always include museum admission. You don't need to buy a separate entry ticket.
Can I cancel a guided tour?
Yes — free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour starts. After that, the booking is non-refundable.
Are private tours available?
Yes, on request — contact the museum's group department directly. Minimum 2 weeks advance notice and the rate is per group rather than per person.
Is the guided tour wheelchair-friendly?
Fully. The museum has lifts to every floor and the tour route is step-free throughout.
Can the tour be delivered in Spanish?
Yes — Spanish, English and one or two other languages run daily. Less common languages (Japanese, Mandarin) usually require booking 1–2 weeks ahead.
